How my lovely new city got it's name

How our lovely city, got it name

As I travel through the area of downtown Portland, I notice that not are we only rich in history but also in culture, monuments, as well friendly people. Portland as we know it today is a lot different now then back in 1843’s, where we had no electricity or streetcars and people running back and forth from 1 place to another. When Mr. Pettygrove and Mr. General Lovejoy Came upon this land they were just passing thru on the Willamette River had no idea in mind that they would settle here and make it their home. At that moment, overcome by the beauty of the land and the area.

Now as you think about this, you would not think of Portland being anywhere else, if someone came to you and said. Did you know that Portland was going to have a different state name? That would make a person wonder, as I go into how Portland became who we are today think about the different area of the world we would be in. and wonder would we be them and them be us?

A settler named Mr. Overton discovered Portland in 1843; he saw great potential for this mountain area filled rich timberland. The only problem was Mr. Overton was lacking a quarter to file a claim for the land. Therefore, he sold his half of the land of 640 acres to Mr. Pettygrove and Mr. General Lovejoy for twenty-five cents. As Mr. Pettygrove, being from Main and Mr. General Lovejoy coming from Massachusetts wished to name this famous town and not being able to settle the matter at hand, to name the land. Therefore, they proposed a toss a coin, which tossed three times. Once for Boston head up and tails down three times for Portland. Moreover, that decision was, made in 1845 during a dinner party in Oregon City. So our lovely city we live in simply made by a coin toss.
